One of the biggest worries when planning a trip to Okinawa is the weather—especially during typhoon season.
During our visit, a typhoon was approaching, and the sky was a heavy, gloomy gray. We headed to the beach thinking, “The water might not be clear, but let’s go while it’s still dry!”
We even debated buying full snorkel sets but decided to keep it simple, bringing only swimming goggles. As it turns out, that was the best decision ever!
Against all our anxieties, we discovered that a cloudy day is actually the “God Tier” condition for a beach trip with children.
1. Access & Basic Information
Getting there is incredibly easy!
If you are staying at Hotel Nikko Alivila, Nirai Beach is just a few steps away.
It is highly recommended as a spot to kill time while waiting for your hotel check-in!
2. The Verdict: Can You See Fish at a Natural Beach?
We timed our visit during low tide, which made a huge difference. Even near the outer buoys, the water was shallow enough for an elementary schooler to stand.
Fish-Watching Report
- Clarity: Even under cloudy skies, the water was transparent enough to see the seabed from the surface!
- Blue Fish: We spotted rare, bright blue fish (possibly Blue Damselfish).
- Striped Fish: There were plenty of Indo-Pacific Sergeants (Oyabitcha) swimming near the buoys. My kids had a blast chasing them.
Pro-Tip: If you want to really see the fish, swimming goggles are an absolute must!
Safety First: When a typhoon is nearby, sea conditions can change in an instant. Always follow the lifeguard’s instructions and check the warning flags.
3. Why a Cloudy Day was the “Right Choice”
The absence of Okinawa’s intense, scorching sun turned out to be a massive advantage:
- Less Exhaustion: Without the “burning” heat, we didn’t get drained as quickly and could play for much longer.
- Cool Sand: The soft sand wasn’t boiling hot, so the kids could walk barefoot safely.
- Sand Play: We fully enjoyed “Sand Baths” and building sandcastles without worrying about heatstroke.
4. Nearby Attractions
Great for a quick stop before or after your hotel check-in!
The Grand Mercure Okinawa Cape Zanpa Resort is just a 7-minute drive (approx. 3.2km) away.
5. Summary & Advice
Final advice for future travelers: Goggles are essential!
Seeing the fish at eye level doubles the fun. Please don’t be disappointed if the weather is cloudy!
While blue skies look better in photos, a cloudy day is superior for “ease of play” and “overall satisfaction.” Nirai Beach is truly the most family-friendly beach in Okinawa. 👍👍
